How do I apply?


We accept rolling submissions for artists 18 years & older to  Please submit proposals at least 3 months in advance of your project. Describe yourself and what you plan to work on while at Rose Raft in 800 words or less. Explain your project by covering who, what, where, when, and why. You may attach up to 10 images relevant to your work.


Can I submit video?


Yes! 10 minutes or less.


Can I apply as a group, collaboration, or with a partner?


Yes, one artist may apply for no more than a total of 6 individuals. Please, provide names and contacts of all collaborators in your proposal.


If I am a musician or sound artist, how do I record at Rose Raft?


Musicians and Sound artists have two options:


1.    Apply as an artist to write, rehearse, and record independently. In this option, you provide all your recording materials such as laptop/mic/ 4-track to record yourself with limited assistance during your residency. $25 dollars per day/per individual.


2.    Book time in our analog studio engineered by Philip Lesicko. For more information about the studio including rates and booking contact Philip at

How long are residency opportunities?


Depends on the project. We accept proposals spanning 1 to 14 days.


Is Rose Raft open all year?


No. We are open to projects March-October.  Exceptions may be made to writers during winter months. Writers, please email if you are interested in a winter residency.

This location is perfect for artists wanting a distraction-free and focused environment. Artist looking for both country/city life must have their own vehicle for trips to Saint Louis.


How do I get there?


Car - Rose Raft is easily accessed by vehicle.

Train - Amtrak stations Carlinville IL, Alton IL, & Saint Louis MO

Plane - Lambert International Airport Saint Louis MO & Mid America Airport Mascoutah IL.


If I come by train or plane, can I be picked up?


Arrangements may be made for pickup of arrivals between 9 am and 9 pm at least 4 weeks in advance.  Please provide a need for pickup in your proposal.


How much does it cost?


$25 a day per individual. Rose Raft operates on a sliding scale. If applicable, describe your financial need in your proposal.


What is included in the accommodations?


One bedroom, kitchenette, full bath and installation space.


What tools are available?


Basic hand tools and some power tools are provided such as hammers, drills, tape measures, hand saw, miter saw, levels etc. Please, email to confirm we have a specific tool if it is required for your project.


Are meals provided?


No. Meals are not provided at this time. Artists must bring or buy their own food. Our kitchenette provides hotplates, microwave, and refrigerator. Our local grocery store, Bills IGA is located in Staunton IL. New Douglas hosts weekly farmers market during the summer months. We are happy to participate in planned communal meals with artists during their stay.


Can I work outside?


Yes, Rose Raft consists of 3 acres and we are open to projects involving the yard.


Is there free wifi?




Can I leave artwork there?


No. Please plan to have all artwork created at Rose Raft shipped or taken with you. Plan to leave the space as you found it.


Do you have Neighbors?

Yes. Please respect our neighbors. Quiet hours are from 9 pm to 9 am.


Are pets allowed?

Not at this time. :(

If I have a car, what is there to do in Saint Louis?


Saint Louis is 40 miles South of Rose Raft. It a is a perfect day trip for artists who are looking to explore. The Saint Louis Art Museum, Contemporary Art Museum, and Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts are all free! The City Museum an absolute must see!
